The BJJ Scene in New York City

Manhattan has more academies than any other borough, but you don't have to train there. Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island all have gyms of their own, from Astoria and Bayside to Bushwick and Bay Ridge, so most New Yorkers can find a mat in their own neighborhood. We have pages specifically for Long Island and Westchester, so this one sticks to NYC.

Renzo Gracie is the name you'll see most. Its academies run from the Upper West Side and Wall Street out to Bay Ridge, Whitestone, Bayside and Staten Island. Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu and 10th Planet are here too, and Caio Terra has an academy in Brooklyn. If you go by Google reviews, Glory Martial Arts Center in Bay Ridge stands out, along with Masterskya and Clockwork Jiu Jitsu in Manhattan. You'll also notice plenty of MMA gyms in the mix.

One thing before you sign up anywhere: crossing boroughs at rush hour gets old fast, so the gym near work or on your subway line is usually the one you'll stick with. Manhattan academies are often a few floors up in office buildings, so note the suite number, and send a message before your first visit.
