The BJJ Scene in Seattle
The first thing to settle in Seattle is which side of Lake Washington you'll train on. Bridge traffic can turn a short-looking trip into a long one, so it's usually easiest to stay on your own side. The Eastside has a solid cluster in Kirkland, Bellevue, Redmond and Issaquah. In the city, academies are scattered through neighborhoods like Ballard, Fremont, Queen Anne and Capitol Hill.
Gracie Barra has schools in Seattle and across the Eastside, in Bellevue, Kirkland and Issaquah, as well as in Renton and Edmonds. Renzo Gracie has academies in Fremont and Sammamish, and 10th Planet and Alliance have a presence too. Several of the busier gyms are MMA or kickboxing gyms that run jiu-jitsu classes as well, so it's worth knowing which classes are gi, no-gi or striking before you show up. Google review counts run highest at places like Fitness Quest MMA in Auburn, Mat Chess Mixed Martial Arts in northeast Seattle and Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Seattle.
