The BJJ Scene in Bangkok
Bangkok's biggest cluster of gyms follows Sukhumvit Road, from Khlong Toei and Thong Lo out to Phra Khanong and Bang Na. The second-biggest sits around the business district in Sathon and Bang Rak, and north of the center there are gyms in Phaya Thai and Chatuchak.
This is Muay Thai country, and a fair number of gyms teach jiu-jitsu under the same roof as Muay Thai and MMA. Count Google reviews and Marrok Gym on Rama III Road comes out on top, ahead of Tiger Eye, a Muay Thai and MMA gym in Phaya Thai, and Bangkok Fight Lab off Sukhumvit 50. Two team names you might know: Carpe Diem has a Bangkok academy, and Evolve MMA has a gym at EmSphere.
Addresses here usually give a soi, the numbered side street off a main road, so "Sukhumvit 50" means Soi 50 off Sukhumvit. Whichever gym you pick, look up its nearest BTS or MRT station. A distance that looks short on the map can take forever by road once the evening traffic builds, and the trains skip all of it.
