The BJJ Scene in Madrid

In Madrid, jiu-jitsu often shares the timetable. Many gyms here are multi-discipline martial arts clubs, where BJJ runs alongside MMA, Muay Thai, boxing or other arts, so don't assume the gym's hours are jiu-jitsu hours. Classes are usually taught in Spanish.

There's no single jiu-jitsu barrio, either. In town, Tetuán, Ciudad Lineal, Latina and Carabanchel each have a few gyms, and there are others in Centro, Salamanca and Arganzuela. We've also included the wider Community of Madrid, and that's where a big share of the gyms are: in southern suburbs like Getafe, Leganés and Móstoles, in Alcalá de Henares to the east, and in Alcobendas and San Sebastián de los Reyes to the north.

Checkmat and Gracie Barra both have academies here. If you like to check reviews first, Clube da Luta Sanse in San Sebastián de los Reyes, IAM (Instituto de Artes Marciales) in Latina and Tatamisfera in Carabanchel have the most to read on Google. Around Sol or Gran Vía, you're a short ride from gyms in Centro, Salamanca and Arganzuela. Live in the southern or eastern suburbs, and you'll usually find something closer to home than the city center.
