The BJJ Scene in Seoul

Don't put too much weight on Google reviews in Seoul. Most people here get around with Naver Map or KakaoMap instead, so reviews are thin, and a gym with only a few of them isn't necessarily quiet. Some gyms only give their name in Korean, too, so searching 주짓수, the Korean word for jiu-jitsu, in either app is a good way to double-check hours and directions.

You'll find gyms on both sides of the Han River rather than packed into one district. Gangnam and Seocho, south of the river, have the most, and Gangdong, Songpa and Gangseo add more on that side. North of the river, look in Gwangjin, Dongdaemun and Seongdong. Addresses often send you upstairs or down to a basement level of a commercial building, so check which before you set off.

A few academies teach under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu name, in Gangnam, Songpa and Gwanghwamun, and Checkmat is represented through Technica Jiu-Jitsu. Several local academies have branches around the city, too. Even with reviews this thin, two names collect more of them than the rest: Korean Zombie MMA in Gangnam, and John Frankl Jiu-Jitsu at its Namsan and Sinsa locations.
