The BJJ Scene in Mexico City

Mexico City is enormous, but its academies are thickest in the central colonias: Narvarte, Moderna and Del Valle in Benito Juárez, and Condesa, Roma, Juárez and Doctores in Cuauhtémoc. Beyond those, Coyoacán has a good number around the UNAM campus in Copilco and down toward Coapa, and you'll find more in Polanco, San Ángel and the outer boroughs of Azcapotzalco, Gustavo A. Madero and Iztapalapa.

Crosstown traffic is slow, so train near where you're staying. If that's Condesa or Roma, you'll have several options within easy reach. UFC Gym has a number of branches here as well, but they're fitness clubs with martial arts on the timetable, so if a dedicated jiu-jitsu academy is what you're after, look at the smaller places.

Renzo Gracie's affiliates are the easiest to spot, among them MD Self Defense Academy in Condesa and an academy in Pedregal. Brasa, Nova Geração and Zenith have affiliates here too. MD Self Defense Academy Condesa has also racked up some of the most Google reviews in the city, alongside DDR Jiu-Jitsu Mexico in San Ángel and Blue Mat Academy in Doctores. Expect to hear Spanish on the mat.
