The BJJ Scene in Bogotá

First, the altitude. Bogotá sits at about 2,600 meters, more than 8,500 feet, and the thin air tends to catch up with you early in a roll. If you've just flown in, ease into training for a few days before you test yourself.

The gyms are scattered across the city. Chapinero and Kennedy have the most, the north adds Usaquén and Suba, and Teusaquillo covers the middle, with others to the west in Fontibón and as far south as Ciudad Bolívar. Gracie Barra has an academy in Modelia, in Fontibón, which is handy if you're staying near the airport.

A good share of Bogotá's gyms are MMA gyms, so confirm that the class you pick is jiu-jitsu and not an MMA session. Fight Club Bogota and Affinity Studios, both in Chapinero, have the longest trail of Google reviews, followed by AnimalFit MMA in Kennedy. And give some thought to the commute. Bogotá's traffic is famously slow, and at rush hour a trip across town can take longer than the class itself.
